Today in Geek History for October

October 29

1969: A UCLA team sent the very first message over the ARPANET. This computer network later became known as the Internet. They sent the characters l and o to Stanford but the connection crashed before they could finish sending ‘login’. Eleven years later, almost to the day, there was a four hour black out of ARPANET due to corrupted routing tables. We don’t realize how solid the Internet is now as compared to how it started.

1988: 77 year old astronaut, John Glenn, hitched a ride on the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-95 making him the oldest person to launch into space

1947: Richard Dreyfuss was born. Close Encounters of the Third Kind AND Jaws…..WOW!
