July 11

1979: Skylab, the first American space station, comes crashing to Earth after 6 years in space. Most of the debris landed in the South Indian Ocean although a few pieces landed in Australia. The days and weeks leading up to the re-entry were marked by panic.

1997: Contact the motion picture was released. It was based on the novel of the same name by Carl Sagan. Very cool movie...

July 20

1969: Apollo 11 lands on the moon at the Sea of Tranquility. Soon the message: "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." is transmitted. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldren become the first astronauts to step on the moon. 

1976: NASA Lander, Viking 1, lands on the surface of Mars at Chryse Planitia. It held the record for longest Mars surface mission of 2245 sols until its record was broken in 2010 by the Opportunity Rover.
